Asteroid City: Anderson's most existential, liminal work yet.

I watched Asteroid City, Wes Anderson's latest and )arguably) best work yet, a while ago and finally got the opportunity to review it. Check it out!

He has become an artist who, independent of the content of each work, has been regulated and mimicked exclusively for his admittedly impressive and idiosyncratic style, so much so that shallow appraisals only interested in his style prevail, less interested in what they…

the dynamic would definitely be different but coop arguably has his own homoerotic game of chess in season 2b with the windom earle stuff. "windom earle's mind is like a diamond. It's cold, and hard, and brilliant." some of those scenes and shots are very evocative of will describing the ripper. also for what it's worth i think coop, with his reliance on intuition and vibes and his general faith in humanity, would really like hannibal, and that could easily get in the way of him seeing the truth. the laura palmer murder wasn't really that hard to figure out either - the only reason it took so long was because coop got invested in the town and its still-living inhabitants. in the same way that donna is really investigating who laura was, rather than who killed her, coop is investigating life in twin peaks, not a murder in twin peaks. he chooses to focus on the light, not because he's naive but because the dark hurts too much. of course, in the end he has to confront the dark. but i could see coop being very much in denial about hannibal. also, just because hannibal wouldn't connect with cooper like he does with will, that doesn't mean he'd just slip up and get sloppy. remember, s1 hannibal isn't just tricking will, he's tricking literally everyone. i could see coop's dynamic with hannibal being a lot more like jack and hannibal. coop would value hannibal as a friend, he would go to him for advice, he would enjoy his company, enjoy his wit and his allusions and his cooking. as funny as this scenario is, i think it does a bit of a disservice to coop, hannibal and especially WILL. coop is brilliant, but he's also deeply flawed, and i think hannibal could really put some holes in cooper's ideas about good and evil, light and dark, and what is right. cooper believes so firmly in the FBI, in the institutions that he's built his identity around. maybe hannibal could help him to reconcile those inner dissonances, the nightmares caused when you repress your shadow self for too long.

you know that that tumblr post that's like sometimes it's not just the story you're telling that determines how it ends, it's also the roles of the characters in the story that create their own tragedies in a way others could not in their place?

anyway, i was thinking about twin peaks and hannibal both being fbi shows and like. will graham is Like That, which is why nbc hannibal is Like That, but if dale cooper from twin peaks was in will graham's place, he would solve the chesapeake ripper case in .00000002 seconds because his vibes are so bewildering it would completely throw hannibal psychosexual cannibal lecter completely off his rhythm
